Four Factors That Affect Leeb Hardness Accuracy

Hardness Testers 5 min read

Two people, one test block, two different values. The instrument is usually fine. Leeb hardness is extremely sensitive to impact conditions - here is what decides whether the number is usable.

1. The instrument

The sensor must capture impact body velocity accurately; zero drift or slow response becomes error directly. Impact energy stability depends on mechanical design, spring quality and manufacturing precision of the impact device – if this is unstable, no correction downstream will help. Noise introduced by the amplification, filtering and digitising chain contaminates the result as well.

2. The workpiece

Inhomogeneity is the main cause of scatter: segregation, inclusions, porosity or local hardness variation mean every impact sees something different.

Surface condition acts more directly: roughness or unevenness deflects the impact and distributes energy unevenly; oil, scale and coating change contact conditions.

Thickness must be sufficient. In thin material the impact body can punch through or generate internal reflections that disturb the reading. The rule of thumb is at least ten times the impact body diameter.

3. Technique

The impact direction must be perpendicular to the surface, within about five degrees. Consecutive impacts should not be too frequent, or the surface heats locally and hardness changes, and the mechanism inside the instrument fatigues.

How steadily the instrument is held and how consistent the force is both feed into the error – and that only comes with practice.

4. Environment

Temperature changes both material hardness (hotter is softer, colder is harder) and sensor and spring behaviour. The normal working range is minus 20 to 60 degrees Celsius; outside that, correction is required.

High humidity causes condensation and rust on the surface; vibration changes impact direction and velocity; electromagnetic interference disturbs signal transmission. Avoid all three on site.

Summary

Confirm instrument condition and the reference block, check surface and thickness, then standardise technique and environment. Only after those four does the number deserve trust.
