What “Smart” on a Flaw Detector Is Actually Worth

News & Applications 4 min read

Brochures promise automatic defect recognition and grading. In daily use, some of it saves real time and some is still a concept. Here is the split.

Three things that genuinely help

Automatic calibration: material velocities and probe parameters are stored, so basic calibration completes once you select the probe. Faster than stepping through it manually, and fewer operator mistakes.

Automatic positioning: depth, surface distance and equivalent size appear as soon as the echo arrives – no more chart lookups. On high-volume scanning this saves the most time of anything on the list.

Recording and replay: the scan can be recorded and played back. Disputed calls do not require returning to site, and new operators can learn by watching an experienced hand.

Three things still in progress

Automatic defect classification: on reference blocks and textbook defects the algorithms perform well. Real defects vary endlessly, and slag echoes often resemble lack of fusion. A human still makes the call.

Complex geometry: curved surfaces, multi-material interfaces and coarse-grain welds distort the beam badly. No algorithm gives a stable answer there; experience and the right probe still win.

Hot or high-pressure environments: the probe and couplant are the limit, and intelligence does not help.

Two "smart" features people overlook

The interface: local language, touch screen, icon-based menus. For front-line staff this matters more than the algorithm – when hiring is hard and turnover is high, fast onboarding is efficiency.

The data interface: exportable reports and the ability to feed an asset system. The value of inspection data is not the moment you take it, but the traceability years later.

How to choose

Do not be sold on "AI recognition". Confirm four things first: does it calibrate accurately, does it position quickly, can it replay the scan, can it export a report. Those four earn their keep every day; the rest can wait.
