Keeping an Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge Trustworthy

Thickness Gauges 5 min read

The cost of a bad thickness reading is rarely rework. It is a thin wall that was never flagged. The maintenance routine is what keeps the number signable.

1. Maintenance starts with cleaning

After each use, wipe the housing and the probe and remove couplant residue. The crystal face must stay free of scratches, so nothing sharp goes near it.

Store it dry, ventilated and out of strong light, away from heat, humidity, magnetic fields and weight. Miss those conditions and the crystal degrades noticeably faster.

2. The probe is a consumable – check it on a schedule

Over time the crystal degrades and the cable develops intermittent contact from repeated flexing. Two checks: is the contact face scored, and does the cable have a hard kink or exposed conductor.

A scored face can be dressed flat and parallel with 500-grit paper; if the reading is still unstable, replace the probe. A cable with an exposed conductor is always replaced – intermittent faults are the hardest to trace.

3. Calibration and its record

Calibrate on a reference block on a schedule, or send the unit for traceable calibration. Keep the record of every calibration: it is both a quality-system requirement and a diagnostic clue. When readings start to shift, the record tells you whether the instrument drifted or the probe aged.

4. Correct operation is maintenance

Match probe and mode to the material and surface condition; mismatched parameters are more common than instrument faults. Hold the probe flat with even pressure, do not lift or tilt it, and keep the couplant thin and even.

Do not push on with a low battery or an odd display. Low voltage causes the reading to drift, and that kind of error looks perfectly normal.

5. One real lesson

During a refinery turnaround, thickness data with a systematic bias nearly let a pipe wall pass at the wrong figure, and a leak risk went unflagged. The investigation found the instrument sound: the probe had not been checked for a long time and the couplant was applied carelessly.

What those incidents share is that every step was roughly right, and roughly right adds up to wrong.
