Hand-Held Roughness Tester: Three Prerequisites
A hand-held unit is treated as something you pick up and use. A number you can defend takes three things: a prepared surface, consistent parameters and a steady hand.
1. One misunderstanding first
Some material claims hand-held roughness testers work optically or by laser without contact. That is true of a few models only. The great majority are stylus instruments: a diamond stylus is drawn across the surface and a displacement sensor reads the profile.
So the same limits apply: it can mark soft materials, it needs a reasonably flat measuring face, and stylus wear goes straight into the reading.
2. Prerequisite one: prepare the surface
Oil, coolant, swarf and mill scale either lift the stylus or change the contact. Wipe with a non-woven cloth before measuring, and take off oxide with fine paper where needed. Skip this step and every number afterwards is in question.
3. Prerequisite two: fix the parameters
Cutoff, evaluation length and filter setting – all three locked. The same batch measured at different settings gives data that cannot be compared, and when comparing with another plant, ask which setting they used first.
Normal machined surfaces take a 0.8 mm cutoff, coarser surfaces 2.5 mm, with an evaluation length of five cutoffs.
4. Prerequisite three: hold it steady
Without a stand, any movement of the body is added to the stylus signal and shows up as a jumping reading. Let the probe rest under its own weight, keep the body still, and drive only horizontally at constant speed.
For a decision that matters, a simple stand is cheaper than measuring five times and averaging.
5. Its real role on the line
A hand-held unit is not a metrology standard, it is a field judge: is this pass good enough, can this batch go out, has the process drifted. Reports and arbitration still go back to the bench.
Put it in that position and its value is obvious: fast, able to reach the part, good enough.
