Setting Traverse Speed on a Roughness Tester
The speed at which the stylus crosses the surface is the parameter most people ignore. It decides both whether fine features are captured and whether the environment gets into the measurement.
1. Too fast: the stylus skips
Micro-geometry is irregular, and the stylus needs time to complete one rise and fall across each peak and valley. Run it too fast and the stylus is carried to the next peak before it settles, the profile gets flattened and Ra comes out low.
Faster still and the stylus leaves the surface and drops back. Impact content enters the signal and the reading wanders without pattern.
2. Too slow: the environment joins in
Stretch the measurement out and temperature change, air movement and floor vibration all have time to accumulate. Part and instrument expand at different rates, the stylus drifts relative to the surface, and the data creeps in one direction over the run.
On a pocket unit the housing is small and has little room to shed heat, so a long session warms the electronics and affects signal processing as well.
3. Choosing the value
Look at the surface. A coarse machined face has wide texture spacing and tolerates more speed; a fine finish needs a slow pass.
Look at the instrument. Every unit has a recommended range, and outside it the data is no longer trustworthy. That figure in the manual is not decoration.
Look at repeatability. Three measurements at one point with wide scatter mean the speed is wrong or interference is present – slow down first, then hunt for the environment.
4. A practical test
Measure a reference specimen three times at one speed, then three times at the next setting. If the two sets differ clearly, the surface is speed-sensitive and the slower setting is the one to use.
Summary
Speed is neither a throughput dial nor an accuracy dial. It has to match the texture, stay inside the instrument range and survive the site, and repeatability is what finally decides.
