Five Habits That Decide How Long a Coating Gauge Lasts
The same model runs five years in one shop and needs a new probe in two in another. The difference is not luck, it is five daily habits.
1. The probe is a consumable
The probe ages before anything else on the instrument. After use, wipe the contact face with a lint-free cloth and a little anhydrous ethanol to remove metal swarf and coating powder; in storage, fit the cap and keep it in a dry box.
Do not bend the cable in a tight radius – keep it above 5 cm. A broken conductor inside shows up as an intermittent fault, the hardest kind to trace.
2. The battery decides how long the electronics live
Do not run a lithium pack down to shutdown. Recharge below 20 percent, and for long storage hold it at 40 to 60 percent with a charge-discharge cycle every three months. Storing flat is the main cause of capacity loss, and a degraded pack brings voltage instability and a reading that jumps.
3. Preparing the surface protects the probe
Rust, oil, paint skin and burrs all put a side load on the probe during measurement. Grinding flat first protects the data and the probe at the same time.
On curved parts use the matching curved probe. Forcing a flat probe onto a curve will not deform the part, but it will wear the spring inside the probe.
4. Environment and storage
Dusty sites call for a dust cover, with the filter cleaned at the end of each shift; wet areas call for a sealed housing. For long storage choose somewhere dry and free of acid or alkaline vapour, around 45 percent relative humidity.
5. Calibration records matter more than calibration
Calibrate on a reference foil before the first measurement of the day and write the result down. When readings start to shift systematically, the record tells you whether the probe is ageing or the environment changed – faster than sending the unit back on a guess.
Summary
Long life is not about handling the instrument gently. It is about managing the probe as a consumable, the battery as a battery, and calibration as a daily record. Do those three and the service life usually doubles.
